EU, WE NEED YOU.

BREXIT BREAKDOWN

On Thursday 23rd June 2016, the British population decided to change the country and the lives of many. The news broke my heart. I felt the freedom to travel, explore, learn and integrate being taken away from me. That feeling was awful as an individual, I didn't think of how it must have felt to company or collective that relies on travel and culture. There was a public outcry, and even now, a year and a half on, we are unsure of what the outcome will be.

FREEDOM
To me, fashion roles thrive on the ability to explore the world and be inspired by each countries creations. I am a "Third Culture Kid", meaning I am from two different nationalities and was born in an entirely different country. This has never been a curse, and I have always appreciated my cultures as they have made me who I am. With this in mind, when I found that I may have to apply for visa's to visit my family, it took away that freedom. My admiration for fashion would not be the same if I hadn't had insight to all these different cultures. Although this change is horrible for me, this is not what the government care about. Their main priority is immigration and "protecting our country". An ironic statement when the humans that have made our country and culture thrive are often from different nationalities and backgrounds. The thought of living in place that restricts the freedom of people makes me want to leave before the storm begins.

OPEN MINDS, OPEN BOARDERS

The power of an open mind is how fashion continues to grow. How can this be achieved with closed off countries and a small minded ethos? The fact is, there will be budding fashion designers, artists, creatives and models who live in a country where they can not fulfill their dreams. We should be accommodating to them, opening our arms and providing them with education and care.
Money aside- closing boarders and stopping integration will cause a decline in the creative world.

FACTS AND FIGURES

"Other bodies are also in danger of losing funding. “It’s about job creation,” says Judith Tolley, manager of the Centre for Fashion Enterprise (CFE), which supports emerging brands with funding from the EU that’s matched with funds from the London College of Fashion. “We have worked with Erdem, Mary Katrantzou, Marques’Almeida, Craig Green. We help creative talents develop their brands into sustainable businesses that have longevity and create jobs.” The CFE has funding of £5.3m secure for a new three-and-a-half-year project supporting fashion and tech pioneers in the UK. And after that? “We really don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The topic is ridden with uncertainty. Primarily in the finances of things. Specifically in fashion, the location of the fabrics has a huge effect on the price and quality. Will brands have to change their target market and value due to this event? Will consumers be able to afford the new products?
Will fashion become plain? None of us know yet.

REBELLION

Whether you're a fashion student like me, or Vivienne Westwood herself, we all have a voice.
Despite there being a huge hovering question mark over leaving the EU, if things go in the way the Tory government have planned, we may still have a chance.
Throughout history, most major events are acts of anarchy and rebellion. Arguably the cons of leaving, out way the pro's to us creatives. So I say, use your creativity to prove a point. Make a powerful message through any medium; fashion, art, literature and of course, your voice.
Decide your own destiny, and believe in your thoughts.
